British Ports Association Conference sails into Torquay

Tor Bay Harbour is today hosting the British Ports Association's annual conference at the Barcelo Torquay Imperial Hotel.

Everyone from fishermen to cargo handlers, from cruise operators to offshore energy pioneers are due to attend the two day event at this top Torquay hotel.

The 150 strong delegation will be welcomed by Mayor Nick Bye. It is the first time Torbay has hosted the association's conference.

David Whitehead, BPA chief executive, said: "It's great to be holding our annual conference again in the South West.

"We hope that we can shine a light on a region that boasts a staggering array of port and marine businesses and makes a huge contribution to the regional economy.

"There are many vital issues as the planning regime goes through huge changes and as the new government's policies and plans, particularly spending on the national transport network, take shape.

"We will be hearing from experts in their fields on topics as diverse as communicating with stakeholders to increasing coastal traffic.

"We look forward to meeting colleagues and enjoying the superb location."

The conference opened on Tuesday evening with a drinks reception at the hotel hosted by the TT Club. Between conference sessions the delegates will be treated to tours of Torre Abbey and the new Fish Market facility at Brixham Harbour.
