The ninth International Conference on Environmental Enrichment is being held at the Riviera International Conference Centre, Torquay. The conference runs every two years; recent venues include New York and Vienna.

Other bodies sending delegates include the Animals Asia Foundation, Hong Kong, the Kerala Forest Research Institute, India, the BioResource Research Centre in Islamabad, Pakistan and Disney's Animal Kingdom.

It is hoped that the conference will benefit the local economy, with hotels including the Corbyn Head, Livermead and Livermead Cliff all welcoming delegates.

Supported by AstraZeneca Laboratories, Valcent (eu) Ltd., Mazuri, the British & Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria (BIAZA), Devon Life and ESW Solutions, the conference will be a lively mix of formal and informal presentations, practical demonstrations and social events.

Paignton Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling said: "We are attracting delegates from right across the animal world, people involved with domestic pets, working animals, companion animals, laboratories, farming and zoos.

"Environmental enrichment is about stimulating animals mentally and physically and helping to promote animal welfare and the best possible quality of life within a managed environment. It is an exciting and dynamic discipline busy with innovation, creativity and study."
