Top Twirlers to vist RICC twice

Britain's top baton twirlers whirled in to Torquay last week as the Riviera International Conference Centre hosted the British Twirling Tournament, selection trials for the British team.

And in November, the baton twirlers will be back again with the European championships.

The first British Isles Baton Twirling Association Open Individual Championships took place on Saturday February 23 with competitors from across the country competing and a special guest appearance from Britain's Got Talent semi finalist Craig Womersley.

This is the first time the event has come to Devon, previously it has been held in the North of the country, and organisers are excited about a new venue.

Prior to the conference, organiser and BIBTA chairman, David Lucas, explained: "Many of the competitors will not have competed in this event before. We will get a lot of competitors from South of Birmingham taking part this time".

"It will be a nice challenge for all of the children. A lot of them will be under the scrutiny of the England team manager, Jo Freeman, who will be looking for people for the Great British team to take part in competitions in the US next year."

Most of the competitors were aged five to teenagers and displays took place throughout the day with singles, doubles and triples demonstrations.

Presentations took place at the Rainbow International Hotel in the evening.
