Making Sense

Over 500 people from all over the south west, many of whom are involved in caring for hearing or visually impaired people attended a very special Vision and Hearing Exhibition at Torquay's Riviera International Conference Centre.

Service users, carers, employers, members of the public and health and social care staff along with providers, gathered in the Centre's Forum to view more than 50 stands on show highlighting different aids and ways that people with hearing or visual-impairment can be helped.

The one day show was organised by Torbay's Care Trust's Sensory Team with the help of the Riviera International Centre's event coordinators Rachel Perry and Viki Thompson.

Katy Heard, Service Manager for Sensory Services at Torbay Care Trust, explained: "The exhibition was designed to give people with sensory loss as well as their families and carers, the opportunity to find out what support is available to them.

"The day was an overwhelming success and is a testament to the huge amount of work that went on behind the scenes by the Sensory Team and also the Riviera Centre's events coordinators. They pulled out all the stops for us, organising free parking, screens and technical support, and arrangements for refreshments all of which were very successful. We have already had lots of feedback from exhibitors that it was the best organised event they had ever attended."

Over 50 companies provided information on services, equipment, employment and benefit advice and the exhibition included a number of workshops including sign language, lip reading taster courses and pension planning.
Katy added: "We want people's feedback into how we can improve all services to make them more accessible for people with hearing or visual impairment. If anyone is interested in helping us with this feedback, please could they contact us on (01803) 219800 as we would really appreciate their assistance."
