As one of Britain's top conference resorts, it is widely acknowledged that Torquay can offer a wide choice of conference venues, a dedicated conference and exhibition facility, mild micro climate, a wide selection of easily accessible accommodation, a conference bureau to bring all your ideas together, the list goes on...

However we are now proud to add to all this the converted Purple Flag award, national recognition for excellent night time economy strategies and best practice. In other words Torquay town centre has proved to be clean and safe, offer great bars, clubs, arts and cultural scene, street shops and other diverse choices at night, for all ages and delegates!

The Purple Flag scheme has been set up to establish national standards and improve the image of Britain's town centres at night. Just as the Blue Flag is an indicator of a good beach (of which Torbay was awarded 6 earlier in the year) the Purple Flag offers reassurance to consumers that their city centre offers a good and safe night out. Areas are assessed on a range of criteria including personal safety, cleanliness, transport, attractiveness and appeal, arts and cultural offer, how welcoming they are, as well as the strength of partnership working.
Assessors carry out the judging process by exploring, examining and experiencing the nightlife of the town centres; acting as any person would when visiting Torquay on a night out.

Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM) Chief Executive Martin Blackwell said:
"It's a real pleasure to be awarding Purple Flag status to Torquay. The partnership has worked extremely hard to develop and improve the evening economy and has been justly rewarded. It demonstrates that our towns & cities at night can be places for everyone, that are clean and safe with great public spaces, cultural attractions, and unique identities."

Over the last 12 months Torbay Town Centres Company has worked alongside Devon and Cornwall Constabulary on achieving Purple Flag Recognition.

Barry Cole, Managing Director, Riviera International Conference Centre (RICC) Said:
"Recognition of our resort as safe and fun is important in the pursuit of business tourism to Torbay; this award is testimony of the diverse choice that delegates can enjoy when they attend a conference here. It is vital for a town to offer a complete mix of facilities, services and experiences when attracting conferences to the RICC and Torquay"
