Association of Anaethetists of Great Britain & Ireland

Association of Anaethetists of Great Britain & Ireland

The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland was conceived and founded in 1932 by Dr Henry W. Featherstone (1894-1967), to promote the development and study of anaesthesia as a specialised branch of medicine.

Since that time there has not been any major development in British or Irish anaesthesia that has not been either initiated or promoted under its auspices, including close involvement in the negotiations that preceded the inception of the National Health Service in 1948.

Today the Association represents the interests of a very considerable majority of anaesthetists in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland and, through its overseas membership, has close contact with many other countries both inside and outside the British Commonwealth.
